TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

I’m Betsy Vise, and I love going to Northridge High School. I run track and cross country and am involved at my school in various ways: SGA, Ambassadors, Prom and Homecoming planning committees and more. I’ve been at Trinity since my Dad became the pastor in 2013, and while here I’ve loved teaching 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday School and doing slides and live-stream in the back sound booth.

CAN YOU SHARE ONE WAY THAT GOD HAS BEEN FAITHFUL TO YOU RECENTLY OR SOMETHING HE IS TEACHING YOU?

This year God has been really faithful in the friends he has provided. It has really made my year so full and fun. I’m just so thankful that the Lord put them in my life.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES?

I love to run! You can catch me running everyday of the week often with friends on Northridge Road. I also love to do a little art when I have the time. I also enjoy playing spikeball and pool with my friends!

WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO COLLEGE? DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO MAJOR IN?

I’m headed to Ole Miss! I plan on majoring in International Studies through the Croft Institute and studying Arabic in the Arabic Flagship Program.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL OR PARTICULAR MEMORY FROM YOUR YEARS AT TRINITY?

I have so many fun memories from my time with youth at RYM in the summer! I’ve loved getting to stand on the chairs and sing at large group, play spikeball and volleyball with the youth group, and just hang out with my friends at Trinity.

IS THERE ANY WAY THAT WE AS A CHURCH COULD PRAY FOR YOU?

I’m actually heading to Ole Miss June 1st—two days after I graduate— to start studying Arabic. I would love prayer for this summer, for endurance, special memories, and that that I’m able to get my ducks in a row before I go.

What’s your favorite piece of clothing you own / owned?

I live in altheisure so anything in that realm is my favorite. I love my tennis skirts and tank tops.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Any day is better when I get to drive around in my car with the sunroof down! Especially on a pretty day or nice night, it can make any day feel happier.

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Kacey Musgraves! Mary Gibbons might have said her too. She's our favorite artist, and its our dream to go to a concert of hers together.

What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?

Three summers ago, my family drove to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and it was the prettiest thing I've ever seen. I loved getting to hike, and I'm dying to hiking somewhere else soon.

What is the most impressive thing you know how to do?

I can run a 5:29 mile! I hated every second of it, but I'm very proud of my time!

What book impacted you the most?

All through late elementary school and middle school, I was obsessed with the Harry Potter Books (I've actually read the 1st one 7 times). Those books really gave me a big love for reading that I still have today!

What weird food combinations do you really enjoy?

Recently I've been into putting Peanut butter in my cereal! Honestly, I you could put Peanut butter into anything, and I'd love it.

For Trinity’s 25th Anniversary the original pastor at Trinity (who prayed for me before I was born) spoke with me. I was in middle school at the time, and he was so encouraging to empathize with what middle school is like. He encouraged me to embrace the hard and to know that I’d fine more like minded friends once I went to college. That conversation stuck with me throughout highschool and has been a huge encouragement to me.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

My name is Sarah Barnes, and I am a senior at Northridge High School. My parents are Michael and Stacy Barnes. I have a sister, Olivia who is 15, and a brother, Preston who is 13. My family enjoys taking trips and watching movies on Netflix together. My personal favorite trip together was this past spring break when we traveled to Steamboat, Colorado to ski. Throughout high school, I have enjoyed being involved in multiple sports, clubs, and social organizations. If I had to pick one thing that I will miss most about high school, it would most definitely be playing tennis on the tennis team. I am very thankful for the memories I've made with my family and friends throughout high school, and I am very excited for what God holds for me in the future.

CAN YOU SHARE ONE WAY THAT GOD HAS BEEN FAITHFUL TO YOU RECENTLY OR SOMETHING HE IS TEACHING YOU?

One way that God has been faithful to me recently is providing a community of support for me through my tennis team this year. In the beginning of the season, we hardly talked. With that being said I was somewhat anxious about the season. I remember going to our first tournament in Mobile and we all stayed in the same hotel. The first night we were there we all went and hung out in a teammates room. Ever since that night our girls team has been inseparable. I consider the friendships I've made with these girls one of my biggest blessings this year.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES?

Some of my hobbies include playing tennis, driving around with friends and listening to music, going to the lake or river in the summer, and playing corn hole at my grandparents house.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO COLLEGE? DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO MAJOR IN?

I will be attending the University of Alabama in the fall and as of right now I am majoring in business.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL OR PARTICULAR MEMORY FROM YOUR YEARS AT TRINITY?

The Christmas Eve candlelight service at Trinity has been a special memory for me throughout the years. Every year I look forward to going with my family and singing Silent Night with candles at the end of the service.

IS THERE ANY WAY THAT WE AS A CHURCH COULD PRAY FOR YOU?

The church could pray that I will be able to make a smooth transition from high school to college and that I will be able to find friends that will keep my focus on the Lord.

What are some small things that make your day better?

My day is always better when girls on the tennis team go somewhere to get a snack or treat after practice. We all talk about our days, give each other advice, and enjoy spending quality time together.

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

My favorite artist would definably have to be Morgan Wallen. He has a song for every mood I'm in—haha!

What shows are you into?

Some shows that I enjoy watching are Cobra Kai, That 70's Show, The Bachelorette, and American Idol.

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

I LOVEEE doing Christmas the old-fashioned way. I think that having Christmas traditions like advent calendars, watching older Christmas movies, wearing matching pajamas on Christmas Eve, and listening to traditional Christmas music makes Christmas the best time of year.

What’s the best and worst thing about getting older?

One of the best things about getting older is that I am finally able to make decisions for myself. One of the worst things about getting older is realizing I'll have to start paying for everything and start making decisions that will affect the rest of my life. This responsibility makes me really want to know the difference between right and wrong as I keep getting older.

Name three things you are loving.

I am loving making new friends that will be in college with me, the future that is ahead of me, and the time I have left at home before I move.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I am married to Lane and together we have two boys, Judah and Cristian. They are 3 years apart. We love to be outside, travel, and enjoy music. We look forward to our annual beach trip every year, and we love visiting with extended family.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

He has been really faithful in blessing us with good health. We are currently looking for a new house, and we are already seeing him be faithful with putting things together that we never could have expected. He is teaching me lately to delight in His Word. I am learning the beauty, mystery, and awe in His Word and how full it is.

How can we be praying for you?

I still struggle daily with being a stay at home mom. It was the last thing that I thought I would be doing, and sometimes boredom sets in, and I crave adventure. I have always loved traveling and new things, and have struggle with routine. I love and feel so blessed that God has allowed me to be a mother to these two wonderful boys, but I need prayer that I’ll begin to see the joy and excitement in each ordinary day.

What is your favorite family tradition?

I look forward to watching the same Christmas movies every year.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

James and I have been married for 16 years. We grew up in Birmingham attending school and church together from a young age. Our first date was Junior Prom, and the rest was history. We are parents to two precious boys, Spencer (age 9) and Parker (age 7). We relocated to Tuscaloosa in January 2019 and began attending Trinity shortly afterwards.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

God has been teaching me that he can use me right where I am. Serving him doesn't need to be big or visible from a worldly sense to matter. He has been challenging me to ask him daily how to serve him with more intention in small ways.

How can we be praying for you?

Our family has started the domestic adoption process. We have been praying for years as a couple and with our children how to be faithful on his call to adopt. We ask for prayer over the details of the adoption and that God would enable the process to go smoothly according to His will. Please also join us in praying for the expectant mothers and families we will meet during this time.

A good friend is trustworthy, loyal and loves my children as their own.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Sunshine, a good night's sleep & family meal!

What’s the best gift anyone has every given you?

When I was 19 year old, my Great-Grandfather gave me his WWI Navy uniform. It is my most cherished gift because I know how much it meant to him and (to be honest) because he gave it to a girl. For a Mississippi man born in 1900, he always celebrated my gender and pushed my ambition. His dreams for me were limitless, and I will forever cherish his impact on my life.

We are a team who loves each other fiercely.

I’m Jane Harvey and am from Guntersville, AL. I come from a pretty big and close family and am unashamedly obsessed with my first precious nephew, Huck Harvey. I am a teacher of the little children. I graduated from The University of Alabama in 2012 and returned to Tuscaloosa in 2016 to teach at Matthews Elementary School, where I mentored while I was a UA student. I am also the cheer coach for Collins-Riverside Middle School. In my free time you might find me dancing or you might find me napping— it really depends on the day!

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

Throughout this pandemic and leading up to the beginning of the new school year, God has been teaching me to lean on Him and rest in his timing. I’ve been learning to let go of being in control of every day that comes along and to use the gifts He has equipped me with to serve my students the best that I can. He has also shown me— in big ways— how He is using my community to make me feel taken care of.

How can we be praying for you as you?

As the semester continues, I would appreciate prayers for the uncertainty that is to come. Also, that God would continue to equip me with the ability to meet my students where they are, whether it be in the classroom or online.

ME yellow.JPG

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I was born and raised in Birmingham where I developed a love for outdoor adventures, writing, and playing music with my dad. In my family it's just my parents, my older brother and me. My mom grew up in Tuscaloosa and is a retired school teacher. My dad grew up in Anniston, AL, pursued law and started his own practice as an attorney. Growing up, my home church was a Methodist church, but my faith matured in a non-denominational church.

Naturally, in a family of four UofA alumni and raging Tide fans, I attended and graduated from UA with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies while training in career and executive coaching work. I spent my college years with friends, leading worship with a college ministry, and in my sorority where my passion grew to be a "missionary" in the greek system at UA. I LOVE the city of Charlotte, NC and had a plan to move there for work, but putting that aside, I followed the impression to stay in Tuscaloosa to work for RUF at Alabama and pursue my heart for campus/Greek Life ministry. I am enjoying my work in RUF with Alabama students, and am excited to be more connected to Trinity as my home church.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

God is teaching me "simple" things at the moment— that are not simple at all! Like accepting his love for me and knowing it isn't tied to my performance. He's teaching me boundaries in relationships and redefining what good friendship is. He has been faithful in providing for me and my family during this challenging time.

What makes a person a good friend? What characterizes your best friends?

Good friends are loyal and honest, consistent and intentional, supportive and self-sacrificing! My best friends are all of that plus have a great sense of humor—we laugh so much.

What is your favorite family tradition?

My dad has always been good at rhyming/writing riddles, and at Christmas time he always creates a scavenger hunt around Birmingham for me and my brother! The clues take us to different places we grew up going!

What are some small things that make your day better?

A good meal. Music. An encouraging note or text.

What is something that your friends would consider “so you”?

The store Madewell—basically everything you can get there!

Discipleship 2020 | January & February

January 17 was such a sweet night kicking off the new year and our focus on Discipleship. The sanctuary was transformed into a beautiful space for eating and fellowship. The food was divine—the recipe for that night’s salad is linked in our February email. We had the opportunity to hear from Kaitlyn Peterson, Olivia Pendley, Alyce Smith, and Jennifer Waddell about how the Lord has been using discipleship in their lives. Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I am married to Colton and we have two little girls, Caroline and Garland Grace. We have been in Tuscaloosa around 10 years now, which I never would have believed when we got married. Around 5 years ago, I started my interior design business which is a constant juggle, but I love.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

These days the Lord has been showing me several areas where I have a hard time trusting him. He has been so faithful to not only reveal those things and how they fail me on the daily (our idols demand so much!) but has also given me the grace to cling to him and a desire for his presence in my life above anything else.

Would you rather be rich or famous? Why?

Speaking of idols... ha! Definitely rather be rich so I could be my own best client.

What is your favorite family tradition?

I love how we have begun to shape our own few days of tradition around Christmas for our family. We start with a big family party in Birmingham, have cousin Christmas, get dressed up on Christmas Eve for church, eat Chinese for dinner while watching a Christmas movie, and have a lazy Christmas morning. This year we started the tradition of having a big fancy Christmas dinner for all of our family at our house on Christmas night.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Coffee, toddler hugs, and a Marco Polo thread with friends who live far away.

What is the most impressive thing you know how to do?

My kids think the most impressive thing I can do is touch my tongue to my nose while crossing my eyes.

What is something that your friends would consider “so you”?

“I just listened to this podcast that you will love/need/talks about that! Here, I’ll send it to you!”

Name three things that you are loving.

I am loving organizing small areas of the house in the New Year (my closet, the junk drawer, bathroom linen closet). I am also loving the show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and drinking Lemon Spindrift.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

I generally have a couple of books going at once so right now I am reading Lit by Mary Karr, Seculosity by Dave Zahl, and periodically come back to How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

My name is Olivia Pendley. I grew up in Gainesville, Florida with wonderful parents— my dad is a pastor and planted a church in Florida, and my mom a stay at home mother. I have an older and younger brother that I'm very close to. In high school, my parents moved to Montgomery for my dad to start working at Trinity Presbyterian Church and now I attend UA and go to Trinity Tuscaloosa!

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

I am a senior, so I am in a busy time that is full of change and uncertainty. God has been teaching me that He is everywhere I go. Even in the chaos when I cannot seem to find peace, He is the peace within me and within the world. I am learning that while there are "thinner places" (places that can feel closer to heaven and God), joy and peace are right underneath my feet because Jesus brought those things to earth for me to have and participate in.

What makes a person a good friend? What characterizes your best friends?

I think being a true listener and being available in all walks of life—happiness, sadness, discontentment, contentment. And reminding each other that you're on each other's minds in little ways.

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

John Mayer, The Brook and the Bluff, Valley, Drew or Ellie Holcomb

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

Plan my weeks! I love paper calendars.

What’s the best gift anyone has every given you?

My grandmother took me on a trip to London, France, and Austria.

What is one of your favorite smells?

Frasier Fir candles anytime of the year, not just Christmas!

What is something that your friends would consider “so you”?

BIG earrings and splitting food

What is one thing on your "bucket-list"?

I want to live in Europe for a short time. I am hopefully going to check this off my list this summer if I get to "au pair" (nanny) in Italy.

Name three things you are loving.

I am loving The Book of Unknown Americans. It is one of the most beautiful books about empathy and connection. I’m also loving Drew and Ellie Holcomb's music together, especially the song “Electricity.” And I am enjoying peppermint brownies.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

The Four Loves by CS Lewis and The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd Jones. They are a great mix together!

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

Norman and I have been married for 20 years. We met and got married when we were both living in Atlanta, then moved to Houston. We have lived in Tuscaloosa for the last 15 years. Norman is originally from Tuscaloosa, and I grew up in Arkansas. We have 3 kids - Norman III (19 - Sophomore) attends the University of Alabama and works with the Alabama basketball team as a manager. Madeleine (17 - Senior) and Meredith (14 - Freshman) both attend Northridge High School.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

The Lord has been faithful to us by bringing us back to Trinity. Trinity is an amazing body of Christ, and we love being apart of this church. One of Trinity's strengths is that it lives out the verse: 1 Thes. 2:8b "Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our lives as well."

What is your favorite family tradition?

Most of our extended family gathers at our house each year for Thanksgiving. The day is full of eating, playing outside, and watching football. We love having a place where everyone knows they are welcome every year.

What are some small things that make your day better?

I am an early riser and hardly miss a sunrise; it's my favorite time of the day. I love to drink coffee, pray, read and study my Bible, and walk my dogs. If I ever miss this time, my day feels a little off.

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

Birthdays! I have always made homemade birthday cakes for my kids. Their request is always butter cake, cream cheese frosting and mini chocolate chips in the middle or a decorated chocolate chip cookie cake.

What book impacted you the most?

A Woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George. I have read it over and over again. It taught me so much about being a wife and a mother.

What is one thing on your "bucket-list"?

I would love to go to Israel one day. I love hearing people talk about how the Bible comes alive when you can walk where Jesus walked and see all the historical sites, the temple mount and the beauty of the region.

What are three things you are loving?

I love Alabama football season and how Alabama basketball season seamlessly follows it. I also love the Christmas season and how January brings new beginnings and fresh starts.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

I am always reading something. For fiction, one of my favorite authors is Charles Martin. He has recently written a non-fiction book called, What IF It's True? that I am slowly working through. Also, I love Joel Rosenberg, and I am reading The Persian Gamble.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I am a North Carolina native and a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill. Bill and I have been married for 30 years, and we have 4 children, plus 2 daughters-in-law—all in their 20’s. We’ve lived in OK, IL, NC, and now AL! I enjoy women’s Bible studies, long walks, good books, interactive games, and dark chocolate!

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

During some difficult transitions over the past 2 years, I have experienced God’s faithfulness in leading me to the unexpected. Change is difficult for me, and I questioned my identity as my roles of mom, church member, employee, and pastor’s wife shifted in more ways than one. As I continued to seek the Lord and trust that He leads us where He will be glorified and for our good, I gradually began to embrace these new things with joy instead of fear.

What makes a person a good friend? What characterizes your best friends?

Reciprocity, authenticity, faithfulness, love. Friends who love me as I am but also point me to Jesus with truth and gentleness. Friends that “get you” are such a gift from God and can bring a smile to your face by a simple note, phone call, or visit.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A flight attendant, teacher, or librarian

If you were forced to spend the rest of your life in a library, museum or zoo, which would you choose and why?

Library. There are so many books I want to read and re-read! Also, I just enjoy being surrounded by books and talking about them with others.

What is one of your favorite smells?

Coffee. It connotes mornings, time with the Lord, lingering conversations with friends, and warmth.

What movie can you watch over and over without ever getting tired of?

You’ve Got Mail! It seems like great fun to own that type of bookstore and read aloud to children great literature! I love Meg Ryan’s character: her honesty, dreams, and questions. I’d love to watch it with others and talk about a gospel theme!

Name three things you are loving.

I’m loving the Emotionally Healthy Discipleship courses, brisk fall weather, and exploring the greater Tuscaloosa area.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I'm Laurie Beth Gilmore and I'm married to Ivey. We have two boys, William (7) and Waller (4). I work part-time as a pharmacist and Ivey is an attorney. I was a member of Trinity in my twenties and returned with my family about 2 1/2 years ago. We treasure the friends and community that we have found here.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

Culture teaches us that busy is good. The Lord is reminding me to be still . This time I have with my children is a gift. And it's so short! I am trying to be more intentional. I am getting better at saying "no" to the unnecessary and focusing on the the things that matter eternally.

What makes a person a good friend? What characterizes your best friends?

A praying friend is a gift. I have been blessed with a group of ladies that meet monthly to pray. I have been encouraged and challenged in so many ways by this group. I know I can call on any one of them anytime. And, its a bonus that they're so much fun!

What age do you wish you could permanently be? Why?

I'm 36 now and I'd be ok if I didn't age another day. I have all that I've ever dreamed for....a wonderful husband, two "wide-open" little guys and a great group of friends.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a lawyer which is comical now. I avoid confrontation at all costs.

What book impacted you the most?

I read the Circle Maker about ten years ago and recently re-read it. It's an easy read! The author clearly and practically lays out what prayer looks like, and he reminded me of the powerful results of a bold prayer life.

What do you like most about your family?

I love being a boy mom! There's nothing I love more than watching my boys climb a tree or play in the nearby creek. I love watching them hunt, fish and play baseball!

What is something that your friends would consider “so you”?

Pearls, fresh cut fruit and cheese & crackers.

Name three things you are loving.

I love this stage/age of my boys. They're so much fun! I’m also loving our Trinity community and football season.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

I just finished Raising Boys by James Dobson and began Love & Respect by Emerson Eggerichs.

Ice Cream Social Recap

ICS Slide-2.png

We had a wonderful night of fellowship and worship to renew our hearts as we head into the fall. Stephen Gordon led us in singing, and we reflected on God’s story of redemption through scripture. Megan Houston and Lori Shamblin shared how God has been at work in their lives this year, especially through community found with other women. Preston Adair led us in a prayer of thanksgiving that helped us all to pause and see God’s gifts in our lives, big and small. It was a special night, and we wish you all could have joined us. For those who missed this event (or even for those who were there and just want to revisit the program), we’re sharing the order of worship for the night. Following the simple intentional of ACTS, we purposefully adored the LORD, confessed our sins, gave thanks, and asked God to work in our lives through supplication. May this post be worshipful to you and serve as a resource for you during this season.

ADORATION

Creation

God, you are the Creator of all things. And when you saw all that you had made, you declared it “very good.” (Gen. 1:31) Even before You made the world, God, you loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in your eyes. (Eph. 1:4)

Fall

And though sin entered the world in the Garden, Father, you had already planned our rescue through a Redeemer who would crush the serpent’s head and strike his heel, conquering sin and death. (Gen. 3:15)

Redemption

You are a Covenant Keeping God. You told our father Abraham: “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.” (Gen. 17:7)

And, “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?

Who is like you, majestic in holiness,

awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? (Exodus 15:11)

God, you are our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. (Ps. 46:1)

You have promised to be with us. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

And though life on this side of eternity is hard, we know that you will restore all things. We say with the psalmist, “Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth, you will again bring me up.” (Ps. 71:20)

You came, Jesus, to show us God the Father. You are the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by You all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by You and for You. You were before all things, and in You all things hold together. You are the head of the body, the church; You are the beginning and the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything, You might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in You, and through You to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through Your blood, shed on the cross. (Col. 1:15-20)

And when you returned to the Father, Jesus, you sent your Holy Spirit to dwell with us. You gave us the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, to teach us all things and to remind us of everything you have said to us. The Spirit of Truth guides us in all truth (John 14:26; 15:13)

You are making all things new. We praise you that if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

You are a patient God. You are not slow in keeping your promises, as some understand slowness. You are patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

Consummation

One day you will return and rule and reign completely. Your dwelling with be with men, and You will live with us. We will be your people. You will wipe every tear from our eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things will pass away. You will be on the throne declaring, “I am making everything new!” (Rev. 21: 3-4)

God, you are our Eternal, Unchanging Father. You say, “I am he; I am the first and the last. My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together.” (Isaiah 48:12-13) “I the LORD do not change.” (Malachi 3:6)

Jesus Christ, you are the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8) And we say with the heavenly hosts, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come.” (Rev. 4:8)

CONFESSION

My soul is chastened within me, O God. Yet even in this crush of conviction there flickers a spark of hope, for you have told us you discipline those whom you love.

I have run from your presence and from my conscience, but I would run no more, O Lord. I have hidden myself in shadows, seeking to avoid your face, even as did my father Adam and my mother Eve in their first guilt.

I have drawn away from the sound of your voice, fearful of what you might speak, fearful of what obedience might require, for I have sinned, O Father, and I am pained at this thought, and shamed to bring my faults into the light.

Forgive me, O Lord, lest I despair. Restore me, lest I be forever lost. For your pardon alone is sufficient to my peace; and your death to my resurrection. Embrace me again to life and to right standing with you, O God.

I am always, every moment, in need of you.

Amen.
Taken from Every Moment Holy

THANKSGIVING

Allow this prayer by Scotty Smith to stir an attitude of gratefulness for all of the small and great ways that God is at work in the world and in your life.

Heavenly Father, I woke up in Montana today, and it is jump-starting my joy and fueling my worship. Thank you for commanding Sabbath rest and daily joy. If you never commended (and commanded) the enjoyment of life, we’d probably go to the extremes of presuming the right to simple joys, feeling guilty about having fun, or worshipping pleasure altogether.

So today we’re slowing down enough just to say thank you. Thank you for designing us for rest, pleasure, and delight. Thank you for giving us sensate responders, nerve endings, and smile muscles. Father, thank you for taste buds, acoustic responders, and optic wiring. Thank you for intending joy to be our traveling companion all the way Home.

Thank you for the aroma of anything baking with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon on it; for Aspen leaves dancing in rhythm to a breeze, and the beauty of hand-painted trout (we hope to catch today). Thank you for rainbows after the storm, memory-connecting songs, and that first big bite of flourless chocolate cake.

Thank you for unrushed conversations, snort-producing laughter, and burden-bearing love. Thank you for water-color painting, Jesus’ prayers for our joy, and the freedom to feel what we feel in the moment. Thank you for good naps, heartache-weathered friendships, and the Smith River. Thank you for photography, hiking, and the perfect kale salad.

Above all, Father, thank you that the gospel is absolutely true, incomparably beautiful, and inexhaustibly good. Our ongoing work under the sun has meaning because of the finished work of your beloved Son. Because of your outrageous love for us in Jesus, and your sovereignty over all things, we will rejoice and be glad today. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ holy and loving name.

SUPPLICATION

Nancy Guthrie directs our prayers to the Father to be anchored in what he has promised us in his Word. Ask him for that which will last despite our circumstances.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism for Young Children asks the question, what is prayer? The answer: “Prayer is asking God for things which he has promised to give.” Are we praying for things God has promised to give—like his presence with us, his Word guiding us, his power working in us, his purpose accomplished through us? Or are we limited to praying only for what he has not promised to give—complete physical healing and wholeness in the here and now?

To go deeper than praying only for deliverance means that we approach prayer not as a tool to manipulate God to get what we want, but as a way to submit to what he wants. Through prayer, we draw close to him in our need. We tell him that we will not insist on our predetermined positive outcome but want to welcome him to have his way, accomplish his purpose.

As a women's ministry, we are looking forward to reading and studying Nancy Guthrie's book Even Better than Eden, that will "trace nine themes that run from Genesis to Revelation in the Bible. Each reveals how God’s plan for the new creation will be far more glorious than the original" and then join other women from our area in January for a conference (stay tuned for details!) to hear from the author.

Tell us a little bit about you and your families.

Sara-Margaret: Hi! I'm Sara-Margaret Cates. Tuscaloosa is my hometown, though I've traveled and lived a few other places. I am a theatre artist and educator, and currently lead the performing arts department at Tuscaloosa Academy. In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, traveling, and (slowly) running with my "mom squad"! My greatest joy is being wife to Chip and mother to Tobias (4 yrs).

Cathy: I was blessed to grow up in a very loving, Christian family. I had THE best mother ever! I am marred to Bill and together we have three sons and one daughter (Sara-Margaret!). Bill and I both grew up in a similar way and wanted to mirror that for our own kids. Sometimes we were successful in doing so; other times maybe not so much. But God has been so faithful to us and has brought wonderful things even out of missteps.

How long have you been at Trinity? And what drew you here?

Sara-Margaret: I grew up at Trinity - my family came in 1993. It has been fun to watch the church grow over the years.

Cathy: Since 1993. Trinity was meeting in the Focus building at that time. A friend knew we were seeking a church and suggested several times that we should visit Trinity. We loved it from the first visit! Hearing the truth of the Gospel taught and meeting people who were so open and friendly and so excited about Jesus definitely drew us in.

How has your relationship as mother and daughter changed? Can you share anything you have learned from each other?

Sara-Margaret: I remember feeling tension between us when I was a teenager, but she was always so patient with me! My mom is amazing. She has taught me so much. She is one of the strongest and most humble women I know. Now, we are so close; she continues to teach me. I hope that I'm learning how to be a great mom from her, too!

Cathy: Sara-Margaret has always been full of energy with a "can do" attitude. When faced with a challenging issue, she always finds a way to make it work. Also, she has always embraced her individuality - by God's design. I was never one to put myself out there too much. She has taught me over the years to just be me—hopefully the best "me" possible. When we do have time to get together, I enjoy her not only as my daughter, but as my interesting young friend.

Sara-Margaret, what is one of your favorite childhood memories?

unnamed.jpg

Camping and hiking as a family. Which will probably surprise my mom because I did a LOT of complaining back then (it’s hot; I’m tired; I want to watch TV, etc.). But now, those are some of the best memories of time together, going on adventures.

Cathy, what is one of your favorite memories from when your children were at home?

Oh there are SO many. But I think Christmas mornings, often with cousins present too, perched on the top stairs in their PJ's, looking VERY sleepy, posing for the obligatory photo before being allowed to come downstairs to see their gifts. We definitely have some humorous shots!

Sara-Margaret, how has your view of your mom changed after having children of your own?

You think you know how much your mom loves you, how much she did/does for you...and then you have a child of your own, and suddenly you get just a glimpse of the magnitude of her sacrifices, her stamina, her kindness, and her love. I mean, my mother worked full time and raised two of us, and for a while, it was just her, my brother, and me. And we all survived! I am in awe of her, daily.

Cathy, what has it been like to be a grandmother?

Thrilling! So much fun! Blessings everyday that touch my heart and fill me with joy! I love it when TLC wants to Face Time "Mia."

Sara-Margaret, what has surprised you most about motherhood?

This may not be a popular answer, but I think it bears stating since we get all kinds of messages from society: Motherhood does NOT complete you as a woman. So many amazing women do so many amazing things in addition to motherhood. Many other women do not experience motherhood. And we are not defined by our status as mothers or not mothers. Especially in the South, one of the first questions you get as an adult woman (after "are you married") is "do you have kids" or "when will you have kids", etc. Being a mom is incredible. I LOVE my son. But I feel like we don't tell each other enough - your value as a woman is not in your marital status or your motherhood status. God created us, individually, uniquely to be the women that we are. We are complete only in Him, through Christ.

Cathy, can you offer any wisdom or advice for younger mothers?

I'll share the same advice I often tell young brides about their wedding day. Frequently throughout the day just stop. Take a deep breath as you make a slow 360 turn, taking it all in, and enjoy it. Otherwise, it will be just a blur in your memory. Mothers should do this EVERYDAY. Enjoy those precious ones! Even during those "less-than-lovable moments."

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning medal for?

Sara-Margaret: Schedule Juggling and/or over-committing!

Cathy: Making lists or "dabbling"

What are some small things that make your day better?

Sara-Margaret: Starbucks and hugs from the precious kids I teach! Just the other day, I saw my son's preschool class in the hallway headed to the playground, and they stopped and broke out into one of the songs we had just learned. It was wonderful to hear their sweet voices all singing the school's Alma mater in beautiful unison, big smiles on their faces.

Cathy: Sunshine, my quiet time, good music, hearing from the kids

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Sara-Margaret: Dave Matthews Band

Cathy: John Mayer or James Taylor

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

Sara-Margaret: Read books. I love the ease of having a digital reader, but nothing beats the feel and smell of real, print books!

What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?

Sara-Margaret: Montenegro and it was beautiful! I hope to go back.

What age do you wish you could permanently be? Why?

Cathy: My current age. The fullness of my life right now makes me so happy!

Name three things that you are loving.

Sara-Margaret: I am loving Starbucks, my son's laugh, and that the school year is ending!

Cathy: I am loving semi-retirement, traveling, and my grandchildren!

What are you reading or have you recently read?

Sara-Margaret: I am currently reading Knowing God by JI Packer. A must-read! I also have a long list for my summer reading.

Cathy: Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

My name is Lauren Seawell and I am a senior at Northridge High School! I am the daughter of Jay and Stephanie Seawell. I am the youngest of three with one older sister Brooke and an older brother Jackson. We have lived in Tuscaloosa for 17 years and have been apart of Trinity the entire time.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

Throughout your senior year, there are definitely moments that get overwhelming or that are so busy you feel like you can’t keep up. But through this year, I have noticed how important it is to have a relationship with the Lord and spend time with the Lord. This year I have had to make a lot of big decisions like where I will go to college, what I will major in, who will I live with. And through all that the Lord has been with me, helping me make the right choices. In Isaiah 41:10 it says “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.” This verse has been my go-to verse during times of worry and stress.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy playing basketball and softball for my school. When I have free time outside of sports, I love to go to Young Life and hangout with my friends. I also enjoy painting whenever I get the chance.

Is there any way that we as a church could pray for you?

Finishing up senior year and going off to start a new chapter in just a few months can be scary but exciting all at the same time. If y’all could just pray for the change to be easy and for me not to be anxious and worried, I would so appreciate it.

My name is Catherine Moore, and I am a senior at American Christian Academy. I am the youngest of my family. I have two older brothers, and my parents have been bringing our family to Trinity for almost 24 years.

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

Recently, God has been faithful in the way of providing close friendships with mentors as well as people my own age. These relationships have strengthened my faith and given me a sense of peace as I am about to leave for college.

What are some of your hobbies?

My main hobbies are art, literature, music, and French. I hope to study all of these in college but make a career out of my love for art as a graphic designer.

Where will you attend college? Do you know what you'd like to major in?

I will be going to Auburn University in the fall. I plan on majoring in graphic design and minoring in French.

Do you have a special or particular memory from your years at Trinity?

I have been at Trinity all my life, so there are a myriad of memories I could talk about. One of the things that has stuck out the most though is the way women have invested in me and loved me since I was a kid, so any memory involving those women is very special to me.

Is there any way that we as a church could pray for you?

I would appreciate prayer for my transition into a different phase of my life. College is very exciting but also very daunting, so please pray that the Lord would continue to give me peace and confidence as I head into a new chapter.

What’s your favorite piece of clothing you own / owned?

I have to say I love these plaid pants that I got for J. Crew.

What songs have you completely memorized?

I have memorized too many songs to count. Music is such an influence in my life, so memorizing lyrics just comes naturally. I have memorized everything from the Hamilton, Les Miserables, and La La Land musicals to Lake Street, John Mayer, and Mumford and Sons.

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Lake Street Dive has been a favorite of mine for years now, and I can still listen to them for hours on end so I can always count on them when I need some good tunes.

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

I like to write the old-fashioned way, with a typewriter. I also like to use a record player, so you could say I think that in some cases the old way is the best.

What’s your favorite genre of book or movie?

As far as genres go, I can never get over action movies and classic literature.

What book impacted you the most?

The book that has impacted me the most is Pride and Prejudice, simply because it instilled in me a love for literature.

What’s the best and worst thing about getting older?

The best thing about getting older is obtaining more experiences and more wisdom. The worst thing is having to move on from people who you wish you could have in your life forever.

Name three things you are loving.

I am loving new friendships, coffee, and that feeling I get when an art piece comes together.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

Right now, I am reading a memoir called The Only Girl in the World by Maude Julien, but there is always a Jane Austen novel I am working on too.
