Lean In | Kelly James

Each month, we take time to get to know some of our church members just a little bit better. We hope this short interview allows you to lean-in and helps us all know one another better and grow together as a body of believers.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I am a North Carolina native and a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill. Bill and I have been married for 30 years, and we have 4 children, plus 2 daughters-in-law—all in their 20’s. We’ve lived in OK, IL, NC, and now AL! I enjoy women’s Bible studies, long walks, good books, interactive games, and dark chocolate!

Can you share one way that God has been faithful to you recently or something he is teaching you?

During some difficult transitions over the past 2 years, I have experienced God’s faithfulness in leading me to the unexpected. Change is difficult for me, and I questioned my identity as my roles of mom, church member, employee, and pastor’s wife shifted in more ways than one. As I continued to seek the Lord and trust that He leads us where He will be glorified and for our good, I gradually began to embrace these new things with joy instead of fear.

What makes a person a good friend? What characterizes your best friends?

Reciprocity, authenticity, faithfulness, love. Friends who love me as I am but also point me to Jesus with truth and gentleness. Friends that “get you” are such a gift from God and can bring a smile to your face by a simple note, phone call, or visit.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A flight attendant, teacher, or librarian

If you were forced to spend the rest of your life in a library, museum or zoo, which would you choose and why?

Library. There are so many books I want to read and re-read! Also, I just enjoy being surrounded by books and talking about them with others.

What is one of your favorite smells?

Coffee. It connotes mornings, time with the Lord, lingering conversations with friends, and warmth.

What movie can you watch over and over without ever getting tired of?

You’ve Got Mail! It seems like great fun to own that type of bookstore and read aloud to children great literature! I love Meg Ryan’s character: her honesty, dreams, and questions. I’d love to watch it with others and talk about a gospel theme!

Name three things you are loving.

I’m loving the Emotionally Healthy Discipleship courses, brisk fall weather, and exploring the greater Tuscaloosa area.

What are you reading or have you recently read?

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and The Bird in the Tree by Elizabeth Goudge
